Hello!
I'm Kamini Goh, a Communications Specialist from Malaysia. Can't believe I'm saying this but I did Communications all my life. My uncle wanted me to be an accountant, and I... I just wanted to be a journalist (not anymore). I was just told by multiple people that I was good at talking and that I should take up Communications. It wasn't a bad idea (and I didn't want to do accountancy) so I just went with it, thinking y'know, it'd benefit me someday.
I majored in Public Relations, got into the agency world for about 7 years, then joined client's side - because I wanted more, I wanted to be exposed to both sides, and pick a side. You can say I have about 10 - 11 years of experience in bullshitting professionally, and proud of it.
Ok, now that's out of the way - how did we get here?
I'm not about to make being made redundant my personality (but totally am because this wouldn't have happened without it).
I was made redundant in early 2023 and was left to think about what I truly wanted in my life, well career wise. We will leave the life part for next time.
It took me quite awhile to know and understand that I didn't leave as a fresh graduate, but I left with quite a bit of experience in most industries. Can I get the work done solo? Heck yes. So, I started preparing my portfolio and cold emailed everyone I know. It wasn't an easy thing to do but that's why I also call this whole thing, socialising for social - it literally means that - socialising with people so they get on social... seriously.
20 May 2023
I started Socialising. while studying Project Management in Sydney. I figured, why not? So, I took the plunge, though I wasn't too committed at first.
1 July 2023
I started helping friends with their passion projects, mostly for free but sometimes for pay. This experience levelled up my confidence and motivated me to become more actively involved in Socialising.
September - December 2023
I focused on my studies while also socialising on the side to observe how people run businesses, projects, and events. I wanted to learn about the ins and outs of entrepreneurship.
January - March 2024
I put together my portfolio, created brand logos, and developed my tone. I reached out to everyone I knew, determined to do things the right way. Whether right or wrong, I took the plunge. Life's too short to overthink it. Just go for it!
May 2024
After returning to Malaysia, I tackled the administrative tasks necessary to start my Socialising. business.
Despite the tedious paperwork, I managed to secure my first three clients: one through a recommendation from a casual acquaintance and the other two through cold emailing a massive number of people and organisations. Nothing comes easy, bruv.
Present
I currently work with small and independent agencies managing multiple clients across the Asia-Pacific region, as well as with SMEs seeking to enter the market through strategic brand communications.
I'm in the process of building a small team of freelancers, interns, and short-term contractors.
